On April 2, 2026, the Humanitarian Action Initiative and the International Development Studies program co-hosted a panel examining the normative assumptions embedded in international aid systems. Lucia M. Rafanelli (George Washington University) and Paulina Ochoa Espejo (University of Virginia) discussed how concepts like sovereignty and state-building can marginalize Indigenous and non-Western communities, with Christina Fink (George Washington University) moderating.
